Chikankari Kurti Styling Guide

How to wear a chikankari kurti for weddings, office days and casual outings.

Sea green chikankari kurti and plazzo set

Chikankari is the hand embroidery of Lucknow — fine thread work on light cotton or mulmul. That is exactly why one kurti can carry you from a wedding function to a work day to a Sunday coffee run. Below are ready-to-copy formulas for each occasion.

1. Weddings and festive functions

  • Pick deeper tones — maroon, bottle green, mustard or wine. For daytime functions, pastels and sea green photograph better.
  • Pair the kurti with a churidar or sharara and a light dupatta. The embroidery is already the statement, so keep the dupatta plain.
  • Jewellery: oxidised or kundan jhumkas and a thin bangle stack. A heavy neckpiece hides the thread work.
  • Footwear: juttis or Kolhapuris, with a metallic-toned clutch.

2. Office and workwear

  • Choose calm shades — white, off-white, powder blue or beige read as formal.
  • Straight kurti with tapered trousers or plazzo. The dupatta is optional here.
  • One pair of studs, a watch and a tote bag are enough.
  • Cotton chikankari stays breathable through the day, which makes it ideal for long shifts.

3. Casual and everyday

  • Wear a short or straight kurti with jeans or plazzo.
  • A sleeveless chikankari set is the lightest option for summer and travel.
  • Flat sandals or sneakers, a canvas sling bag and open hair complete it.

Choosing the right colour

White and off-white are the classics and suit every skin tone. Mustard, rust and sea green flatter warm and wheatish tones, while powder blue, lavender and dusty rose work well on fairer tones. Maroon and wine are the safest festive picks.

Size and fit

A chikankari kurti drapes best with a slightly relaxed fit because the embroidery gets room to show. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one. Our sets come in 38, 40, 42 and 44 (S–XXL).

Washing and care

  • Wash separately in cold water the first time, with a mild detergent.
  • Never scrub or brush the embroidery; hand wash gently so the threads stay intact.
  • Dry in shade and iron on the reverse side at medium heat.
